History is a discipline involving reconstruction and interpretation of past human affairs in a manner which seeks to understand change. It uses analysis, examinations and narratives of past events to search for patterns of cause and to explain the course that shapes societies in diverse parts of the world from the earliest times to the present. The History Department offers four sub-majors, Korean History, Oriental History, Western History and Archaeology.
• Korean History: We research the formation and development of ancient and modern Korea. Focus is emphasized on the course of history illuminating the system of Korean society which changes itself continuously. Further specialization may include ancient history, Goryeo and Joseon history, and modern Korean history.
• Oriental History: The program emphasizes understanding of the course of diverse societies in East Asia, focusing on the shape of each historical age. Courses include various issues regarding Chinese and Japanese history.
• Western History: While dividing Western History into the Ancient, Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary periods, we study the formation and change, the development of each age through political, economical, social, cultural and intellectual aspects.
• Archaeology: Archaeology is the study of past human behavior based on reconstruction and analyzing material remains. Courses include principles of archaeology, prehistory of Korea, and analytical topics of archaeology. Graduate
