Grad Korean Painting Thesis Project 1 졸업작품연구 1 본수업은석사학위청구전시를위한준비단계로서학생들은지도교수로부터졸업전시에대한주제및전시기획,제작과정,글쓰기등에대한총체적인지도를집중적으로받으며전시를준비하게된다. Undertheguidanceoffaculty,studentsareexpectedtopursuetheirindividualwork.Studentswillpursueindependentstudioresearchwiththegoalofproducingabodyofworkthatcompletesinacuratedexhibition.Thebodyofworkwillhaveawrittenthesisthatsupportsinfullofthethesisabstract,whichwillhavebeensubmittedforapprovalbysupervisors. 3
Under the guidance of faculty, students are expected to pursue their individual work. Students will pursue independent studio research with the goal of producing a body of work that completes in a curated exhibition. The body of work will have a written thesis that supports in full of the thesis abstract, which will have been submitted for approval by supervisors.

This is a writing-intensive seminar for seniors working on their written thesis. Beginning with the premise that writing is a way to think creatively and critically about our work and studio process, we will experiment with multiple strategies to open up new ways of communicating about our work and to situate it in relation to other artwork and critical debates. Structured as a series of workshops, the class will include individual and collaborative writing exercises and critiques, readings and discussions of artists' writings and theoretical texts. Engaging both imaginative and technical approaches to finding our own writing voice, we will work toward completion of a focused draft of the thesis.

This class investigates the contemporary art world through total immersion in the Korea art scene, including museums, galleries, and artist-run spaces, meeting many art professionals including curators, arts administrators, critics, art historians, and artists. In a succession of field trips, the class looks at art in exhibition spaces and artists' studios, discuss it as a group, do interviews, and analyze our contemporary-art situation in Korea and internationally, both present and future.

Several questions are paradigmatic for the study of 19th and 20th century art, including: How might we understand and explain modern art? How does subjectivity become the critical object of diverse artistic practices? Readings range from such 18th and 19th century philosophers as Kant and Hegel, to critics of modernism, such as Nietzsche, Hal Foster, and Rosalind Krauss.

Several questions are paradigmatic for the study of art, including: How might we understand and explain art? How does subjectivity become the critical object of diverse artistic practices? By readings traditional texts on art theory, students view art from the Oriental philosophical perspective. Eastern philosophy includes the various philosophies of Asia, including Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

In this course students continue to work in response to assignments. These assignments are designed to provide further investigation into the history of making and thinking in sculpture and to raise questions pertinent to contemporary art. This introductory sculpture course is a studio-based forum focused on the use of three-dimensional form in art-making. We will explore our experience of objects in space, both made and found, and investigate the different ways they can be used, suggested, problematized, absent from, and at the center of work called sculpture. Students learn the basics of electricity and electronics while focusing on how to use microcontrollers (one chip computers) in conjunction with sensors, lights, motors, switchers, audio signals, and basic mechanics in works of art.
